Raw stout fabric is often used for sample sewing, toile, reinforcements and simple items where a stable base is needed. The quality is also seen in bag production, internal components and as protective fabric in packaging. Many search for stout fabric on a roll because the 160 cm width provides good cutting utilisation and efficient yardage economy.
The weight of 150–155 g/m² provides a light to medium-weight cotton base that holds its shape without being too heavy. The unbleached, raw surface gives a neutral, natural look that works well for overdyeing, printing and marking in production. The search phrase what is stout fabric often relates to exactly this: a simple, woven cotton canvas used as a standard material when you need to plan and repeat the same process.
Fabric shops and smaller clothing manufacturers order stout fabric as a standard stock item for continuous order flow. Consistent weight and width from roll to roll make it easier to calculate usage and maintain the same results across batches.
Wash at 40 degrees. Pre-washing is recommended, as raw cotton can shrink. Avoid tumble drying for better stability.
Combine with other canvas qualities under Stout if you want more variants within the same product group.
